SAWMA incorporated its first Constitution in the early 1990’s. Since then the Constitution was amended in the mid 1990’s and, more recently in 2010.
With the move for all Australian State and Territory wound management Associations to align themselves more closely with the national body (AWMA) a name change for the Association was endorsed at the 2011 SAWMA AGM. The new name is:
Australian Wound Management Association (South Australia) Incorporated
aka: AWMA (SA)
The SAWMA committee strongly supported this change to our name as closer alignment with the national body will bring with it many benefits. These include increased recognition and political lobbying power, standardised member benefits across Australia, a central Membership Secretariat and standardised website and the ability to strengthen wound management initiatives both in South Australia and nationally.

Proposed amendments to AWMA(SA) Constitution 2012
With the move for all Australian State and Territory wound management Associations to align themselves more closely with the national body, the Australian Wound Management Association (AWMA), it is proposed that in 2012 AWMA(SA) amends clauses 5.2.5 and 5.3.23 of its Constitution to alter the stated period of membership from the calendar year (January – December) to an annual period to be determined by the committee.
Current clauses:
“5.3.5 Those members who are in arrears as at 31 March may have membership cancelled along with all benefits of membership.”
“5.3.23 Membership expires at the end of the calendar year.”
Proposed clauses:
“5.3.5 Those members who are in arrears three months after expiry of the membership period may have membership cancelled along with all benefits of membership.”
“5.3.23 Membership shall expire annually at a date determined by the Committee.”
Rationale for the changes
As an outcome of the structure review and alignment that has been taking place between AWMA and all the state and territory Wound Management Associations, it is proposed to change the annual membership period from the calendar year to the financial year. This will unify all states and territories in this respect, is appropriate from a taxation viewpoint, and will simplify the processing of renewals by the newly appointed national Membership Secretariat.
The proposed amendments to the Constitution will enable the AWMA(SA) Committee to determine the date for renewals, should it be deemed appropriate, without the need to wait for the AGM, or arrange a Special General Meeting, with the extra expense and inconvenience that would be involved.
The AWMA(SA) committee strongly supports this change.
Any Constitutional change must be accepted by the membership of AWMA(SA).
The vote on whether to accept the new Constitutional clause will occur at the AWMA(SA) Annual General Meeting on 15 February 2012.
