From the Presidents Desk This will be a stimulating year for SAWMA members and planning is well underway for interesting topics to further develop knowledge and skills in wound management. SAWMA is very pleased to sponsor our May speaker Mr Geoff Sussman a founding member of AWMA and a member of the scientific organizing committee for the 2nd World Wound Healing Society Congress to be held in Paris in July. Geoff is an excellent presenter and the evening will be informative and stimulating. Please come along and make it a memorable evening. The July meeting will again be a joint meeting with the Association of Stomal Therapy Nurses. More details in the next newsletter. On Saturday 9 October a seminar will be held at the RAH in the Robson Lecture Theatre, Margaret Graham Building. The program is in its final stages and will be sent to you in July with the next newsletter. We have invited 2 speakers from interstate and are negotiating with a speaker from Canada who we were privileged to meet and hear at the recent 5th AWMA conference in Hobart. The title and focus of this seminar is 'Keys to Confidence and Competence in Wound Care'. So please put these dates in your diary and plan to attend. The Registration fee is very affordable. The AGM was held in February and Janet Vincent was elected Secretary of SAWMA. The committee wishes to express a sincere thank you to Rachel Buder who served on this committee for 4 years. Rachel was always willing to be involved and worked to promote SAWMA and better wound management practices. Thank you Rachel for the valuable contribution that you made to SAWMA. Paul Philcox and Michael Arthur were made life members in recognition of 10 years of continuous service to SAWMA committee. Thank you Paul and Michael, you have worked diligently for SAWMA and we appreciate your efforts and commitment. The 5th AWMA conference was held in Hobart in March and this was an excellent conference for examining current wound management practices. SA was well represented with over 30 delegates attending. The AWMA AGM was held. I was unsuccessful in the nominated position of vice president however I have accepted the position of AWMA Secretary. Thank you to all who sent proxy forms along. The meeting was the best attended of any thus far. SAWMA is again offering a research grant of up to $5000.00 for a research proposal that will either enhance management of a person with a wound or will prevent wounds occurring. Closing date 1 August 2004. If you have an idea or are presently conducting research perhaps this grant might assist you in your endevours. Eligibility and research grant information is available from Michael Arthur - SAWMA pager 8378 8884 Once again I wish to remind you all that the SAWMA meetings will be held at the venue of Enterprise House 136 Greenhill Road Unley. This venue has a 130 undercover car park on site, and feedback has been very positive therefore we have booked our meetings for 2004 at this venue again. We welcome your comments on this venue and how SAWMA can meet your wound management learning needs. I am shortly leaving on a 9-week trip overseas culminating in attendance at the 2nd Wound Healing Congress in Paris. Carol Amos will be acting President during this time. Please do not hesitate to phone either Carol or Paul Philcox if you want to know more about our educational evenings and/or seminar or Michael Arthur for membership matters. With kind regards
