From the Presidents Desk 2004 was certainly been a busy and stimulating year for SAWMA members. As I have outlined previously there have been a number of important events that have broadened our knowledge of best wound management practices and added to the debates about best management practice and strategies in management. 2005 promises interesting developments at both local and national level. The SAWMA committee have spent time reflecting on what has been achieved and where to in 2005. As well, at a National level the Australian Wound Management Research Fund (AWMRF) has been established and the Australian Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (APUAP) is being established and it is hoped that both will be operational during this year. Feed back on the Jillian Swaine ‘Multidisciplinary Care of Pressure Ulcers’ workshop and the Keys to Confidence and Competence has been excellent. The Trade was very supportive and a record number of 15 different companies attended the Seminar on Saturday 9 October 2004. This added immensely to the day and SAWMA committee extend its sincere thanks to those companies who supported us via attendance and also by sponsorship. A sincere thank you to Smith and Nephew, our Principal sponsor and to Convatec and Atlas for satchel inserts which all add to the day. S& N also sponsored the Happy Hour that was a tasty way to end a very worthwhile day. Some of the papers presented are contained in this newsletter and can also be found on our website. As you are aware we have not always been able to commence our education meetings on time this year. Often the circumstances have been beyond our control, however some of the factors we can do something about. Therefore we have purchased a data projector and computer to facilitate the evenings. Also the Committee sought the opinions of the Trade on how we can facilitate the Trade Display and the evening and this has resulted in a number of changes to the format of the evening. We will commence with the Trade Display and light refreshments (as we have done previously at UniSA) at 1845 and run for 45 minutes. A bell will be rung at 1925 and the doors to the meeting room shut at 1930. This does not mean you can’t enter however it means that if you are talking with the Trade you can do so with out disrupting the meeting and then enter the meeting. We will see how this goes but it should enable the evenings to flow smoothly and not be quite as late finishing in the past. Your feedback is welcome. The AGM offers you a chance to consider how you can be involved in SAWMA. A number of positions will become vacant and you will find a nomination form in this newsletter and also on the website. We are seeking nominations for President, Vice President, Treasurer and 3 committee members. Please consider if you could make a contribution to the role that SAWMA committee and nominate. I would like to extend my grateful appreciation to the members of SAWMA committee. They are a very committed group of people who work hard to make the educational evenings and seminars that are held very successful. I wish to particularly thank Carol Amos the Vice president who will retire from the committee in February. Carol has been wonderful in her support to me. She has served several terms on the committee during the past 12 years and her enthusiasm and commitment will be missed. Thank you Carol. We wish you well in your retirement. I recommend the February meeting to you. The focus is on the specialist role of Nurse Practitioners in Wound Management. Terry Swanson an endorsed Nurse Practitioner in Wound Management with the Nurses Board of Victoria and 2 of our committee members Margie and Sue who are studying and preparing for the opportunity to become endorsed with the Nurses Board of Sth Australia as Nurse Practitioners will speak about the path towards this event. This should be a great evening. Once again I wish to remind you all that the SAWMA meetings will be held at the venue of The SAWMA committee thanks you for your continued support throughout 2004 and we look forward to preparing an interesting and stimulating program for you in 2005. Please consider nominating for the vacant positions. Best wishes for 2005 With kind regards
